SCA ARTS AND SCIENCES 50 Challenge - My version

What have I gotten into?  Here's a quote from the Arts & Sciences 50 web site:

What the heck IS the A&S 50 Challenge? The A&S 50 Challenge involves doing 50 things in the Arts and Sciences between May 1st AS 42/2007 and May 1st AS 50/2015, in honor of the SCA's 50th Birthday .  The Challenge is a chance to develop skills and learn more about what interests you in a non-competitive, community-based environment.  YOU decide what you want to do over the eight year span, and get encouragement from the Challenge Community along the way.  There are three types of Challenges, outlined below.  You can do one or several, alone or in groups - it is all up to you!
The Three Kinds of Challenges:
The Depth Challenge -
*50 of any one type of thing, in order to push your skills and knowledge to new levels (how broadly you define this is up to you)
The Breadth Challenge -
*do/make/learn 50 new and different things (how new, and how different is up to you/your group), or,
The Persona Challenge -
*making/learning 50 different things that your persona would know, have, or know how to do

I am doing the Depth Challenge, building 50 pieces of garb for my family.  This will actually be about right to give each of us enough full outfits for at least a 3-4 day event, maybe more. The challenge started May 2007, so I've missed out on the first 3 years, but I got a bit of a jump-start on this with all of my preparations for Highlands War.  Even the things that did not get finished for Highlands will help me through this.  With 1/2 of this year, plus all of 2011-2014, and 4 months of 2015, I suspect that I can do this, would have done it even without having this challenge to push me along...but I can use all the motivation that I can find!

So what did I start with?
Undergown - light blue linen - finished
Apron Dress - dark blue wool - finished and has been worn, but needs embroidery
White chemise - cut, not sewn yet - finished October 2010
     Rust-colored/striped kaftan - planned - cut October 2010

Chris' first garb
Black linen tunic - Bocksten style - finished, but want to add a little embroidery
Black linen Viking pants - finished
White linen shirt - cut, not sewn - Finished October 2010

Jim's first garb
Rust-colored linen Viking pants - almost finished
Yellow linen tunic - finished, but need to go back and insert gores that were skipped due to time
white linen shirt - cut, not sewn - finished October 2010

Blue linen kaftan/jacket - need to remake completely - can become loaner garb - does not fit
50 pieces in just under 5 years is 10 pieces per year and here I've got 10 pieces well underway, with more already planned, even without the challenge.

I can do this!

Along the way, I will likely find myself looking deeper into the trims and decorations appropriate for what I'm building.  Not being in a last-minute panic to finish things for an event will help.  Advance-planning will help too.

20 October 2010
Update!
The white undergown for the blue viking outfit did get finished.
Peach gown is almost done.
Rust apron dress is almost done.
Striped caftan is in the works!
The white linen shirts for the guys are done.
I've got a dozen pieces done or in progress.
That leaves 38 to go, over 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 4 months of 2015.  That's 52 months, so less than one piece per month.  That just does not sound bad at all.
Oops.  Forgot the 3 pairs of grey linen pants for the guys, so 35 pieces to go over 52 months.  That's about 2/3 of a piece per month...or 8 pieces per year.
And hey, if I count the two new veils that I've got cut, once they're finished I'll be down to 36 pieces to go!
I CAN DO THIS!

1514 Chemise from picture "Woman with a mirror" by Tiziano Vecellio (Titian) - cut, machine stitching done and hand-stitched cartridge pleating around the neckline about 1/2 done.
Getting ready to cut and stitch a sideless surcote and undergown - red woolen for the surcoat; maybe brown wool gab for the gown...not sure yet.
Really need to get the grey cloak/cape done soon too.  Will need it for winter events.
Do I need to add a chart to this page, in which to log finished items?  How does one insert a table in a blog?  Make a table in Excel, to get the formatting that I want, though it won't come cleanly into here.  Copy the table into Word, then copy from there to here to keep the borders on the cells.  Ok, not perfect and will have to update in Word or Excel and re-copy to here with changes, but this is a start.

Should be at Estrella right now, but running a day late.  Meanwhile though, have finished a few more pieces, and altered some of the second-hand garb.  Navy-blue faux suede - removed fur trim, re-fit bodice and applied red/gold/dark tapestry trim to neckline and sleeves.  Can't see including these altered, second-hand pieces towards the challenge, but still want to keep track of them.
